DOOM was the granddaddy of all modern PC first person shooters. It was, and still is, very fun to play, though by today's standards, it is somewhat pixelated, given that the game was originally built around 320x240 graphics which were mostly sprite based at 30FPS in 256 colors. Though the resolution was low in those first DOS versions, it vastly improved after Windows95 came out and folks started porting it to OpenGL.

The main character, the guy who's eyes you get to look at the world through, has a name: Sergent Fly Taggart, United Space Marine Corps. Fly has a story to tell as to how he got the job of killing demons from Hell to save the world. His story is the underlying theme of the original game. It was also carried over somewhat in the versions to follow, all the way up to the one folks like to play on Windows 10 today.

Fly Taggart was on shore leave after a long battle to quell an economic uprising between nations. The skirmish was for Martian Independence. Fortunately, corporate interests were able to cool relations enough to bring about a sort of fragile peace.

Meanwhile, unknown to most citizens everywhere, a multinational conglomerate known as the UAC, the United Aerospace Corporation, was working to unlock the mysteries of an interesting ancient artifact that was found on one of the moons of Mars, tiny Phobos.

A station had been built on the small space rock, wherein the UAC was conducting all manner of secret scientific experiments to unlock what it believed was a teleportation device which could send people instantly between far flung places.

These experiments suddenly met with disaster after the gate opened on another unknown dimension and could not be closed, allowing those on the other side free passage into our universe...

At the beginning, nobody noticed the invasion. But slowly, people began to change, as if they had become possessed. Folks were turning into zombies. They could no longer be trusted. They wanted blood. They had to feed in the dark of night...

On that fateful day, the monsters from the other side began to pour forth in an unstoppable river of death as the gate remained open. The lab was quickly quarantined as those who had not been attacked and taken over tried but were unable to escape, for now.

Radio calls went out. One landed on Fly's military radio which he was required as a soldier on call to always have on his person. So, as he sipped the mint julep from the deck of his small skiff on the lake, urgent news from the commander demanded his attention.

Fly soon learned that everyone on the Phobos base had been killed. The monsters had begun to transport to the Martian surface colony via a similar gate which had been found years earlier but that had remained dormant, until now.

Fly was ordered to go to Mars and destroy the evil single handed, since all his team mates had either been killed or possessed by the monsters. And so, he packed his bag, boarded the jump ship, and headed for his quest to save what was left of humanity.

They must not make it to Earth. He had to stop them. He had to kill them all...
