Shaconage

The Cherokee Indian word for the Great Smoky Mountains is shaconage, which means "blue, like smoke". My Native People referred to these legendary green hills of East Tennessee as the "sacred land of blue smoke". The mountains get their name from the rising of fog as the trees give off the vapor from the plentiful rainfall, about eighty-five inches per year on average, making this a temperate rainforest.
