Description

Meet a true Ranger's Ranger. This is the fine man who served the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as Superintendent, Ranger Dale A. Ditmanson. Always able and willing to take on a challenge, Ranger Dimtanson was known by the folks he worked with to listen carefully as both sides of a debate were aired, arriving at a solution that worked for the best interests of all. He did a world of good for the park he dearly loved during the final years of his career with the National Park Service.

One of his most significant accomplishments was seeing to the construction of a part of the Foothills Parkway known as the Missing Link, a stretch of road traversing several ravines along the north boundary of the park which had remained uncompleted for several decades. Special bridges were built which afford motorists stunning views of the mountains, previously the reserve of backcountry hikers. The road and bridges were built with minimal impact to the land, a hallmark of Ranger Ditmanson's work ethic.

On January 13th of 2014, the illustrious Ranger Dale retired from his long tour of duty at GSMNP. An interim replacement was carefully selected, being a good fellow from Puerto Rico by the name of Ranger Pedro Ramos. For the ninety days following Ranger Dale's retirement, Ranger Pedro guided the future of the Smokies. Ranger Pedro was followed in June of 2014 by the illustrious Ranger Cindy MacCleod.
